Mistakes I Have Made in My Research Career.

چکیده
I started in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry, London, in October 1972, and spent the next 3 years completing my basic training. I was then offered a research post studying the excretion of dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in patients with schizophrenia. DMT is a hallucinogen used by Amazonian Indians in their religious ceremonies, as well as a minor street drug, and the idea was that people with schizophrenia might be walking hallucinogenic factories. At the time, this idea, which appears bizarre in retrospect, was the main neurochemical alternative to the dopamine hypothesis.1 In the course of this project, I managed to offend the then Professor of Psychiatry at the Institute, Denis Hill, by writing an anonymous editorial in which I criticized the state of UK psychiatric research including his department.2 Unfortunately 1 day soon after, when I got on the London underground, there was Professor Hill. He motioned me to sit next to him, and immediately demanded “Murray, do you know anything about this editorial in The Lancet?” I had to admit that I did. He was not pleased—so colleagues suggested I went to the United States for a year, to let him calm down. By the time I came back I was forgiven—he was a kindly man.

I am deeply honored to receive the 2015 Dennis D. Drotar Distinguished Research Award by the Society of Pediatric Psychology (SPP). Introduction It is the highpoint of my career to receive this award, named in honor of my Ph.D. mentor, Bruce Merrifield. There is little that I can add to what we all know regarding the impact that Bruce has had on peptide research. Certainly, he has had a more significant impact on my scientific development than any other individual. I do need, however, to acknowledge from the start that I ha...

متن کاملWork–Life Balance? It Is Not about Balance, but Priorities
Work–life balance is a never ending topic of discussion among physicians. We constantly discuss how to juggle career advancement, marriage, and children in our daily professional life. Work always seems to be antagonistic to, rather than synergistic with, maintaining a personal life. However, true balance does not sink in until a moment arrives in your life when you consider giving up your care...

I am honored to have been asked to contribute to this memorial issue, although I cannot claim to have known Carl Woese well. Carl's insights and the discoveries that his research group made over the years certainly stimulated my own research program, and at several points early on, interactions with him were pivotal in my career. Here I comment on these personal dealings with Carl and emphasize...
